A €20 tax charge for cruise ship tourists visiting Santorini and Mykonos

santorini visit

Greece is set to introduce a €20 tax for cruise ship tourists visiting Santorini and Mykonos during peak summer months to combat overtourism. Prime Minister Mitsotakis explained that the tax will help manage overcrowding and fund local infrastructure. Santorini and Mykonos, both iconic destinations, have faced increasing pressure from large cruise ship docking at Santorini in recent years, contributing to the island’s chronic problem of overtourism.

The revenue from this tax will be used to improve infrastructure on the islands, ensuring a more sustainable tourism experience. Local strategies, such as digital systems to manage cruise arrivals, are also in place to alleviate the impact of tourism.
