Lisbon, a city known for its rich history and cultural heritage, is now making waves in the hospitality industry. It ranks third in Europe for the most hotels under construction, trailing only London and Istanbul. By 2026, 1,680 new hotels will open across Europe, with Lisbon contributing 36 projects and 4,425 rooms, according to the “Europe Hotel Construction Pipeline Trend Report” by Lodging Econometrics.
Lisbon’s hotel scene has experienced significant growth over the past decade, driven by a surge in tourism and global events. From luxury resorts to boutique hotels, the city’s accommodations blend historic charm with modern comforts. Landmarks such as the 19th-century Palácio Belmonte, now a luxury hotel, highlight Lisbon’s ability to repurpose historical buildings into high-end hospitality destinations.
Portugal as a whole also ranks fifth in Europe for hotel construction, with 114 projects and 14,247 rooms planned over the next two years. The UK, Germany, France, and Turkey lead the way.
Overall, nearly 250,000 new rooms will be added across Europe by 2026, with a strong focus on luxury and upper mid-range hotels. This growth reflects Lisbon’s ongoing transformation into a premier travel destination.
